E-demo Serbay Doru 2: Fantastic Fish – Observation, Filigrana & Transparent Enca
Learn How To Observe Nature Through Glass
Runtime: 31 minutes
Skill level: Intermediate
Requirements: Your own torch or access to a flameworking studio
We are pleased to present Turkish glass artist Serbay Doru in this focused E-demo exploring the construction of an imaginative soft glass fish through layered decoration, transparent encasement and careful sculptural refinement.
This E-demo is designed for intermediate lampworkers interested in developing believable animal forms in soft glass. While the finished project is a stylised "fantastic fish", the demonstration is fundamentally about understanding how observation, planning and layered construction work together to create convincing natural forms. Serbay encourages students to study the anatomy and movement of real fish before interpreting them in glass, demonstrating that successful sculpture begins with observation rather than imitation.
Throughout the demonstration, Serbay guides viewers through the complete construction of the fish, beginning with the preparation of eye murrine and decorative opalino stringers before progressively building the body through transparent colour layering, clear encasement and sculptural detailing. Students are introduced to techniques including marvering, tapering, fin construction, facial modelling and surface texturing, while learning why careful preparation makes later stages of the sculpture significantly more controlled.
What you will learn
- Creating consistent fish eye murrine
- Decorative opalino stringers and layered body decoration
- Transparent colour layering and complete clear encasement
- Sculpting convincing anatomical features including fins, eyes and facial details
- Building believable fantasy creatures through observation of nature
Serbay demonstrates a thoughtful, methodical approach to sculptural lampworking, showing how decoration should always support form rather than compete with it. Viewers will develop greater confidence in heat control, planning and sequential construction, while gaining a deeper understanding of how transparent glass, colour and surface texture combine to create depth and realism.
Throughout the process, Serbay emphasises careful observation, preparation and patience. The demonstration reflects the realities of working with soft glass, including heat management, multiple punties, delicate fin construction and the importance of refining each stage before progressing to the next. Students are encouraged to interpret rather than simply copy, building the confidence to create their own believable creatures inspired by the natural world.
This E-demo can be completed entirely at your own pace. Although suitable for intermediate lampworkers, the techniques require thoughtful control and repetition. Expect adjustments, refinement and learning moments as part of the process.

About Serbay Doru
Turkish flameworker Serbay Doru is internationally recognised for his highly detailed sculptural interpretations of insects, marine life and botanical forms. His work combines strong technical construction with a deep fascination for the natural world, resulting in pieces that are both visually striking and carefully observed.
Over many years Serbay has developed a distinctive teaching approach that helps students move beyond simply following instructions and instead understand the underlying principles behind successful sculptural work.
The Beasties Series represents the culmination of this approach, guiding students from construction, through observation, and ultimately towards interpretation.
