Zurich Glass School founder Dr Julie Anne Denton presents a practical introduction to the fundamentals of flameworking, designed both for those approaching the torch for the first time and for glassmakers returning after time away from the flame.
 
Rather than beginning with a complicated project, Absolut Beginner / Refresher concentrates on the skills that everything else depends upon: understanding your torch, recognising flame chemistry, observing how glass responds to heat, maintaining rotation, pulling a stringer, making and decorating a simple bead, and becoming familiar with the essential equipment of the flameworking bench.
 
For the complete beginner, this is an introduction. For the returning maker, think of it as a reset.
 
What you will learn
Light and extinguish an oxy-fuel torch safely and understand Julie's memorable P.O.O.P. sequence
Recognise reducing, neutral and oxidising flames
Begin reading heat in the glass and understand when to move in and out of the flame
Understand the fundamental differences between soft glass and borosilicate, including glass compatibility
Create a gather and pull thin or thick stringers with greater control
Understand why appropriate flameworking eyewear matters
Prepare a mandrel and construct a simple, balanced bead
Add dots using controlled heat placement and consistent rotation
Understand the difference between slow cooling and proper kiln annealing
Become familiar with the essential tools of a basic flameworking bench
Gain an introductory understanding of oxygen, propane, regulators and flashback arrestors
 
The simple bead is deliberately used as a teaching vehicle rather than an end in itself. Rotation, gravity, timing, heat placement and form are all happening simultaneously, making it an ideal first exercise for teaching your hands and eyes to work together at the torch.
 
Julie also demonstrates the incompatibility between different glass families, using soft glass and borosilicate to make visible why knowing what glass you are working with matters. The emphasis throughout is not simply on remembering instructions, but on beginning to look at the flame and understand what the material is doing.
 
Cooling and annealing are introduced from the outset. Slow cooling in warm vermiculite may help work survive until later batch annealing, but—as Julie makes very clear in the course—this is not annealing. A written soft-glass kiln cycle and temperature conversion chart are included among the supporting resources.
 
You do not need a studio full of specialist tools to begin. The course introduces a small, useful working bench and helps you understand what the equipment is for before encouraging you to accumulate more of it.

Flameworking can initially feel like an extraordinary amount to think about at once. Both hands are moving, the glass is turning, gravity is acting upon it and the flame is continually changing the material.
 
It becomes normal.
 
For now, the goal is much simpler:
 
Watch the heat. Keep turning. Understand your flame. Know your glass. Stay in control.
 
Complexity can come later.
