The Business of British Luxury Craftsmanship with Chris Blade of Cumbria Crystal

A Contemporary Contexts Master Conversation with... Chris Blade CEO of Cumbria Crystal

Inside Britain's Last Luxury Crystal Manufacturer

How do you preserve a 2,000-year-old craft while building a modern luxury business?

In this compelling Contemporary Contexts conversation, Chris Blade, CEO of Cumbria Crystal, shares the remarkable story behind one of Britain's last remaining manufacturers of hand-blown and hand-cut lead crystal. Combining centuries of traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation, Cumbria Crystal has become synonymous with British luxury, supplying royalty, prestigious brands and collaborations with companies including Bentley Motors.

Rather than simply discussing crystal, Chris explores the wider principles that underpin successful creative businesses. From branding and pricing to productivity, innovation and leadership, he reveals how heritage and craftsmanship can become a powerful commercial advantage in today's marketplace. Drawing on decades of experience as a designer, educator and business leader, Chris explains how Cumbria Crystal transformed its fortunes through strategic thinking, new revenue streams and a willingness to adapt while remaining true to its core values. His practical advice is as relevant to independent artists and makers as it is to established creative businesses.

Along the way, the conversation explores working with luxury clients, collaborating with Bentley Motors, understanding your market, building customer relationships and finding opportunities even with limited resources. Chris shares honest insights into leadership, pricing, negotiation and why innovation often begins by recognising the strengths you already possess.

Whether you're an artist, designer, maker or creative entrepreneur, this conversation demonstrates how traditional craftsmanship, thoughtful innovation and strong business principles can work together to create a sustainable and internationally respected creative practice.
