We are pleased to present Josh Yunker, a contemporary glass artist based in Texas whose practice centres on sculptural and functional flameworked glass, in this in-depth E-demo focused on character-driven pipe construction, sculptural balance, and functional design.

This E-demo is designed for intermediate lampworkers interested in refining sculptural control while developing confidence in building functional forms with personality and intention. The lesson centres on creating a Mellow Yellow Sherlock, combining clean structural foundations with expressive shaping and playful character language.

In this demonstration, Josh guides viewers through the complete process of constructing the Sherlock form, beginning with proportional planning and establishing a solid base structure before moving into sculptural development. A key part of the learning arc is the coil potting technique, which is used to build mass, control volume, and create flowing transitions while maintaining structural integrity. Students will see how thoughtful heat placement, orientation, and timing influence form and flow while balancing function with sculptural expression.

What you will learn

  • Establishing clean foundational geometry for a Sherlock-style pipe

  • Coil potting techniques to build volume and control form

  • Controlling wall thickness and airflow during construction

  • Shaping and refining curves for balanced visual flow

  • Managing heat and support while working on larger sculptural forms

  • Creating expressive character through proportion and subtle detail

  • Maintaining functional integrity while sculpting decorative elements

  • Using orientation and rotation to control movement and symmetry

Josh demonstrates how small decisions in shaping and proportion can dramatically affect the personality of a finished piece. Viewers will learn practical approaches to correcting form, refining silhouette, and maintaining structural strength while pushing sculptural expression.

Throughout the process, Josh emphasizes observation, rhythm, and developing a personal visual language. The demo reflects the realities of functional sculptural glassmaking, including adjustments, refinements, and working through challenges as part of growth at the torch.

This E-demo can be completed entirely at your own pace. Techniques shown are intermediate and require patience — expect adjustments, problem solving, and learning moments as part of the process.

After purchase, access may take up to 24 hours to activate.
