Dr Julie A Denton 2: Ghost Flower intro to larger sculpture in borosilicate including petals, leaves, stamens, stems, bridge building and sandblasting flameworked glass.

Founder of Zurich Glass School and teaching exclusively online for ZGS we would like to present master flameworker Dr Julie Anne Denton from Isle of Man / Switzerland. Dr Julie has been educated in the Italian school of flameworking and holds her PhD in the combination of lampworked glass with the hot glass process of sandcasting. This E-course channel is designed to introduce Intermediate level lampworkers/beadmakers to sculpting complicated forms in borosilicate glass. Dragons are a demanding introduction to sculpting off-mandrel.

This E-course is designed for early learner to intermediate level lampworkers/beadmakers to learning and understanding key sculptural techniques. These techniques are demonstrated to help you gain the confidence to start to work with borosilicate glass on a larger scale.

This E-course channel is designed to gently introduce the sculptural beginner to a larger scale off mandrel form exercise in borosilicate glass. The sculpture will be large but will be broken down into manageable bite size chunks throughout the course. The ghost flower sculpture will be made in components during this one day class. The flower can be up to 40 cm tall depending on how confident you feel and how far you are willing to push your own boundaries. We shall focus on the use of multiples as a way to create a more complex form, we will utilise glass ‘bridges’ to help us construct the form easily and the flower will demonstrate just how versatile borosilicate glass can be. We will learn how to keep the heat in our borosilicate forms during the making process. Thereafter we will learn how to control the heat in our glass and pull those sensuous forms you desire by using the inner heat in the glass to your advantage, or by using that natural phenomenon: gravity.

Please remember, what we are creating is tricky and takes A LOT of practice, logic, patience and an inquiring mind. This E-course is a stand-alone course which is complimented by Guido Adam 1: The beauty of wearable art kingdom, Julie 3: Sculpting Dragons and Dr Julie 3: Big Figure E-course channels. Our Dr Julie 2: Ghost Flower course will push your skill level, help you understand tricky design techniques and give you confidence in your own glass making abilities whilst empowering you to own your creativity. By the end of this course you will feel like an entirely new world of sculpting in a larger scale in flameworked glass has opened up to you.

Along with your subscription to the valuable video demonstrations on the ZGS website, you will also receive a 30-minute complimentary online one-on-one consultation with ZGS founder Dr Julie Anne Denton to help you with the tricky bits in person. You will receive personal help and encouragement with the projects. It is advisable to use this consultation as our participants find them invaluable.

One can work through this course of video tutorials at their own pace, but on average this course takes two to three weeks to complete if you include your practice time. By the end of the course not only will we have created a large glass flower, but we will also have learnt how to safely use a sandblaster without breaking our 'fragile' flameworked objects. After completing this channel your confidence using borosilicate glass will have risen considerably.
