Founder of Zurich Glass School and teaching exclusively online for ZGS we would like to present master flameworker Dr Julie Anne Denton from Isle of Man / Switzerland. Dr Julie has been educated in the Italian school of flameworking and holds her PhD in the combination of lampworked glass with the hot glass process of sandcasting. This E-course channel is designed to introduce Intermediate level lampworkers/beadmakers to sculpting complicated forms in borosilicate glass. Dragons are a demanding introduction to sculpting off-mandrel.
In this E-course you will learn to make a dragon in many stages to skyrocket your sculptural learning curve in the comfort of your own studio. The dragon will be made in components in coloured borosilicate with the use of powders and contemporary filigrana techniques to create depth and reality as opposed to a cartoon-like flat representation.
Dragon wings are made by pulling points and encasing the tubing, blowing the tubing and finally cutting and shaping our wings. The body will encompass claws, dragon tendrils, scales and eyes among other things. You will also create our own dragon eye murrine with magnifying lens. Techniques include the use of tubing, pulling points, colour application, heat/glass control, glass rules of physics, the family of annealing flames from cold to hot and vice versa, how to combat cracking, how to fix glass and structural engineering techniques – how to make glass bomb proof for the post and transportation. In this class we will make three different types of dragon - standing, hanging and framed.
Please remember, what we are creating is tricky and takes A LOT of practice, logic, patience and an inquiring mind. This E-course is a stand-alone course which is complimented by Dr Julie 3: Big Figure and Dr Julie 2: Ghost Flower boro courses. Our Dr Julie 3: Dragons course will push your skill level, help you understand tricky design techniques and give you confidence in your own glass making abilities whilst empowering you to own your creativity. By the end of this course you will feel like an entirely new world of sculpting off-mandrel through flameworked glass has opened up to you.
You will also receive a 30-minute complimentary online one-on-one consultation with ZGS founder Dr Julie Anne Denton to help you with the tricky bits, whilst receiving personal help and encouragement with the projects. It is advisable to use this consultation as our participants find them invaluable.
