We are pleased to present renowned functional and sculptural glass artist Salt (USA) in this in-depth E-demo focused on sculptural glass techniques, material layering, and creative exploration.

This E-demo is designed for early learner to intermediate lampworkers and beadmakers interested in sculptural glasswork, working off-mandrel, and developing greater control over heat, flame chemistry, and form.

In this demonstration, Salt guides viewers through the creation of a highly detailed glass snail sculpture inspired by Lewis Carroll’s pet snail. While the project itself is specific, the techniques demonstrated translate across many sculptural forms and encourage experimentation and personal interpretation.

What you’ll learn

  • Managing heat and flame chemistry when working with thick and irregular glass masses

  • Precision sculpting and shaping for balance and expression

  • Orientation adjustments, punty use, and foot pedal flame control

  • Making repairs and embracing repetition as part of the learning process

Salt demonstrates how to combine clear glass rod with Boro Sticks White, apply Amazon Bronze frit, and introduce Blackjack colour to achieve rich, organic surface patterns reminiscent of a nautilus shell. Viewers will learn how careful colour layering and flame placement can prevent unwanted colour bleed while maintaining depth and complexity.

The demo also explores glass layering using standard colour and sintered glass, learning includes:

  • How sintered glass is produced industrially

  • How to achieve effective results with cost-efficient sintered glass at the torch

  • Subtle colour-mixing strategies (such as tinting green with brown) to create more natural, lifelike tones

Throughout the process, Salt speaks openly about the realities of sculptural glassmaking: uneven heat distribution, working with mass, correcting mistakes, and developing a personal creative voice through patience and practice.

This E-demo can be completed entirely at your own pace. Techniques shown are intermediate and require patience — expect challenges, repairs, and learning moments as part of the process.

After purchase, access may take up to 24 hours to activate. Learning options and access details are outlined in the Learning Tiers section.
