We are pleased to present functional and sculptural glass artist Salt from the USA in this focused E demo exploring blown borosilicate drinking vessels and off mandrel sculpting.
This E demo is designed for beginner to intermediate lampworkers and beadmakers interested in developing confidence and control when working with borosilicate tubing, particularly those drawn to blown functional forms and sculpting off mandrel.
In this demonstration, Salt guides students through the creation of a borosilicate shot glass using heavy wall 32mm tubing. The lesson emphasizes pulling points, adding colour efficiently without compromising structural integrity, and maintaining flexibility for multiple design elements while preserving a clean functional form.
Students will learn how to punty an elliptical base, open the vessel, trim the lip, shape the shot glass, and safely remove the piece from the punty. The demo focuses on heat control, timing, and material awareness when working with thick glass and managing form under pressure.
Throughout the process, Salt emphasizes repetition, patience, and acceptance of setbacks as part of skill development. The techniques demonstrated require practice and persistence and are intended to build long term confidence and consistency in blown functional glassmaking.
Techniques shown range from beginner to intermediate and require patience. Expect challenges, repairs, and learning moments as part of the process. After purchase, access may take up to 24 hours to activate. Access is provided for six months.
