E-course: Serbay Doru 2 - Intermediate Beasties

E-course: Serbay Doru 2 - Intermediate Beasties

Learn How To Observe Nature Through Glass

Once students understand how to construct creatures, the next challenge is learning how nature itself works.

Serbay Doru 2 builds directly upon the construction skills introduced in Serbay 1 and shifts the focus toward observation.

Students begin exploring colour, transparency, growth patterns, anatomy and natural structure in greater depth while tackling more sophisticated projects inspired by insects, marine life and botanical forms.

Throughout the course Serbay demonstrates how careful observation can transform a technically competent piece into one that feels convincing, natural and alive.

This course places particular emphasis on:

• Naturalistic observation
• Colour layering and transparency
• Silver foil applications
• Botanical construction
• Marine forms and anatomy
• Multi-part assemblies
• Refined finishing techniques
• Visual rhythm and organic growth patterns
• Using colour as a structural tool

Projects include silver foiled butterflies, beetles, corals, detailed fish, blown sea anemones, Large leaves and flowers, and framed compositions.

By the end of the course students will have a much deeper understanding of how natural forms are structured and how observation can be used to create more sophisticated and visually convincing work.

Who Is This Course For?

This course is designed for students who already possess basic sculptural construction skills and wish to develop greater refinement, complexity and artistic judgement.

The Next Step

Serbay 2 asks:

"How does nature actually work?"

It is the observation stage of the Beasties journey and bridges the gap between construction and interpretation.

It is the construction stage of the Beasties journey and provides the technical foundation upon which the later courses are built.

Included with the course is a library of supporting material, including Zurich Glass School's hand-drawn visual technical maps, student guides, demonstration notes, reference diagrams, and supplementary learning resources. These materials have been specifically developed to help students revisit techniques and reinforce learning away from the torch.

  • About Serbay Doru

Turkish flameworker Serbay Doru is internationally recognised for his highly detailed sculptural interpretations of insects, marine life and botanical forms. His work combines strong technical construction with a deep fascination for the natural world, resulting in pieces that are both visually striking and carefully observed.

Over many years Serbay has developed a distinctive teaching approach that helps students move beyond simply following instructions and instead understand the underlying principles behind successful sculptural work.

The Beasties Series represents the culmination of this approach, guiding students from construction, through observation, and ultimately towards interpretation.
