The Art of Remaining an Artist: Authenticity & Independence with Stewart Home

A Contemporary Contexts Master Conversation with... Stewart Home

In this artist talk, the provocative writer, artist, filmmaker and activist explores what it really takes to remain an artist on your own terms.

What does it actually take to keep living and working as an artist — without allowing money, institutions or the market to dictate what you make?

In this wide-ranging and characteristically unconventional conversation, artist, writer, filmmaker and activist Stewart Home joins Dr Julie Anne Denton to explore the practical and philosophical realities of sustaining an independent creative life.

Beginning with Stewart's decision to learn how to live on very little, the discussion moves through money, artistic success and the unexpected problems that financial rewards can create. Stewart considers whether artists should follow fluctuations in the market, when publishers and galleries are useful — and when independence may offer greater freedom.

The conversation also moves through writing, filmmaking, public collections, activism and the influence of punk, asking whether an artist needs to remain within one discipline at all and what it means to make work authentically.

Rather than offering a conventional formula for artistic success, this is a conversation about building a creative life on your own terms — and developing the resilience, independence and grit required to keep making work over the long term.

  • About Stewart Home

Stewart Home is a British artist, writer, filmmaker, pamphleteer and activist whose practice moves deliberately between disciplines. His work encompasses fiction, experimental film, visual art, cultural criticism and political activism, including campaigns addressing gentrification and overdevelopment in London.

Rather than separating writing, art and activism into distinct careers, Home has developed an independent practice in which different media become vehicles for ideas, provocation and cultural critique. His books, films and projects offer an unusually uncompromising perspective on authorship, institutions, artistic identity and what it means to sustain a creative life outside conventional career structures. His supplied material also documents his work across experimental film, publishing and anti-gentrification campaigns.
