Where creativity calls

Detailed Course Description
Serbay Doru 3 – Advanced Beasties, Butterflies, Crabs and Fruits of the Sea in Soft Glass Rising flameworker Serbay Doru returns to Zurich Glass School with his most ambitious soft glass course to date. Serbay, originally from Turkey, is a visionary sculptor whose creatures capture both the anatomical truth and spirit of the natural world. With a growing collector base and an increasingly refined technical language, Doru continues to push contemporary soft glass toward new levels of realism and intricacy. This advanced course consists of three intensive weeks of Saturday and Sunday LIVE sessions, each 1 to 1.5 hours, held in our interactive Zoom room. Across six focused sessions, Serbay will guide students through the creation of highly detailed sculptural works including a beetle constructed entirely from murrine, a peacock mantis shrimp, a super realistic large seashell, a monarch butterfly, a silver foiled cuttlefish, and a large crab. This level is designed for committed students ready to refine precision, control, and compositional thinking in soft glass. You will work on complex, multi stage sculptural forms that require patience, advanced layering, and confident heat management. Expect technical challenge, anatomical study, and disciplined repetition as you elevate your sculptural practice. As with previous levels, students may work in borosilicate if preferred, as many of the structural techniques remain transferable. An accountability group will run alongside the LIVE sessions, offering a dedicated space to share successes, challenges, and progress. The watch back facility allows you to revisit all demonstrations throughout the course period. Students retain exclusive access to the session recordings for six months from the start of the course, providing extended time to consolidate techniques and deepen understanding. The course includes three complimentary one on one consultations with Dr Julie Anne Denton, each valued at 100 CHF, offering tailored guidance to help resolve technical sticking points and strengthen your sculptural understanding. Comprehensive visual technical handouts will also be provided to support each demonstration and serve as a lasting studio reference.
